Why Arizona for a golf-buddies trip

Nowhere else packs this much elite public-access golf into one warm-weather metro. The Scottsdale/Phoenix area alone has 200-plus courses, most open to visitors, plus resort-and-pool rental homes built for groups and an easy airport (PHX) for out-of-towners. Play a marquee round in the morning, hit the pool in the afternoon, and Old Town Scottsdale at night. It's the easiest big golf trip to pull off.

The must-play courses (top-rated, all public or resort access)

• TPC Scottsdale — Stadium Course — home of the WM Phoenix Open and its legendary par-3 16th "coliseum." The bucket-list round; book it first (120+ days out for peak season).
• We-Ko-Pa — Saguaro & Cholla — on Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation land with not a single house in sight; Saguaro is routinely ranked the #1 public course in Arizona by Golfweek. Pure Sonoran Desert golf.
• Troon North — Monument & Pinnacle — the classic North Scottsdale desert experience, weaving through granite boulders in the shadow of Pinnacle Peak. Two great 18s at one stop.
• Grayhawk — Raptor & Talon — Tom Fazio's Raptor is a Scottsdale standout with immaculate year-round conditioning; a reliable, high-end round.
• Talking Stick — O'odham & Piipaash — a Coore & Crenshaw-designed pair on Salt River Pima land; great value, walkable, and central.
• Boulders Resort — North & South and Camelback — resort golf attached to lodging, easy to bundle into a stay-and-play.
• Papago Golf Club — the top municipal in Phoenix; a genuinely good, wallet-friendly round to balance the splurges.

The move for a 3–4 day trip: one premium round (TPC or We-Ko-Pa), one or two mid-tier rounds (Talking Stick, Papago, Camelback), and a rest-optional pool afternoon between.

Where to stay

Base the crew in a single large rental with a pool so nobody's scattered across hotel rooms — North Scottsdale puts you closest to Troon North, We-Ko-Pa, and Grayhawk, while Old Town trades a little drive time for walkable nightlife. When to go

Best October through May — peak conditions (and peak prices) run January–April. Summer is brutally hot and best avoided for golf. Book marquee tee times 60–90 days out for peak season, and 120+ days if you're going near WM Phoenix Open week (early February).

Coming from Las Vegas

Scottsdale is about a 4.5–5 hour drive from Las Vegas — very doable for a road-trip crew, or a short PHX flight. If you'd rather break it up, Mesquite, NV (right on the Arizona border, ~1.5 hrs from Vegas) has standout desert courses like Wolf Creek and Conestoga — a great add-on round on the way to or from Phoenix.

Off the course

Old Town Scottsdale is the after-golf hub — steakhouses, patios, and a walkable bar district — which is exactly why Scottsdale doubles as a top bachelor party destination. Add a spring-training game (Cactus League, Feb–Mar) or a pool day and the non-golfers stay happy too.
